about

I had never even been to Tennessee before writing this song. But Hey! George Lucas made some pretty cool movies that take place in outer space and he's probably never been there either.

lyrics

To Tennessee

‘Top off a tank full of diesel fuel,
crank up the tunes, and off I cruise, oohoo,
haulin’ twenty tons with no time to lose.
A’ thousand miles to drop the load and move.
Then it’s home, here I come.
Every second I’m away is way to long,
because everywhere I go
reminds me of sweet, Tennessee
with its painted scenes and its beauty queens.
And everything I see
reminds me that all roads will lead
to the fresh fields of Tennessee.
Truck-stops and gift-shops, cops and booze,
cheap women too, they know my route, oohoo…
To the tourists only passing through,
I may seem rude, but have a job to do.
So I’ll claim my piece of highway,
put the big-rig in gear, and pass them smiling,
because everyone I see
reminds me of my family
waiting patiently in Tennessee.
And everyone I meet
begs to hitch a ride for free
and head with me to Tennessee.

And it’s where I go to find my peace,
to the crown jewel of the great southeast.
Because everywhere I go
reminds me that I long to be
so loved and free in Tennessee.
And everyone I know
reminds me of the homey feel
and the homemade meals in Tennessee.
And everything I see
reminds me of sweet, Tennessee
with its history and its beauty queens.
And everyone I meet
says they’ve always dreamed of being
in the painted scenes of Tennessee.
So hitch a ride with me to Tennessee.
